Extensive indoor and similar broiler concepts have been developed mainly in European countries over many years to respond to local demands for specific chicken production standards.
If chickens are marketed as ‘Extensive indoor’ in the EU then producers must meet the specific EU marketing standards for poultry meat. These concepts usually have requirements producers need to meet beyond those defined by BCC/ECC. These concepts differ to BCC in that they typically stipulate minimum ages at slaughter and / or maximum growth rates for the chickens.
For example, a minimum of 56 days of age before slaughter must be met to meet EU regulations for Extensive Indoor plus other requirements. Voluntary concepts may be based on EU regulations or choose their own criteria for example stocking density or modified housing with winter gardens.
Leading examples of these concepts include the Beter Leven 1 star concept in the Netherlands and the German Welfare Initiative ‘Haltungsform 3’ tier concept link.
