The European Marketing Standards defines legal requirements for chickens marketed as free range. This includes different categories including free range or traditional free range production. The same regulations cover other marketing terms including for example Corn Fed. Similar legislation exists in other European countries such as the UK.
Free range or pasture production occurs in many other countries outside Europe too including the USA, Asia and Australia where local voluntary or legal requirements may be found.
The EU marketing standards for poultry meat requires producers marketing chickens as Free Range to meet specific criteria according to including using approved slower growing breeds that are reared for a minimum age of 56 days + maximum stocking density of 13 birds/m² and less than 27.5 kg/m².
Traditional Free Range requires broilers to be grown to at least 81 days with many other specific production requirements.
